Attention teachers: Here is money for your science projects!  CAST members may apply for up to a $200.00 mini-grant to suppliment their science program.

Mini-grants are available for elementary teachers and for secondary and college-level teachers.

Just click on the "Application Information" link and complete the online application. The CAST board will review requests at their next board meeting, make selections, and notify applicants. Grants will be awarded until allotted funds are depleted and winners will be announced on the web site and in the next newsletter. Hurry and submit your applications before funds run out.

No more than 2 grants will be awarded to any one school in a one year period.

In order for the money to have maximum impact, grants that utilize funds for non-consumable items will be given preference.  In order to be fully considered, mini-grant applications must include the quantity of materials to be purchased with grant funds, as well as the exact expense for the materials.

Mail-in grant requests should include a short letter telling us how you would use the money to supplement your classroom budget to strengthen your science program, including the quantity of mateials to be purchased and the exact expense for the materials.  Be as specific as you can including catalog numbers if possible. Call for Mini-Grant Applicants

Dear Friend,

The Celebrate Urban Birds project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology offers mini-grants to help museums, afterschool programs, libraries, community centers, and other local organizations fund neighborhood events. These events may involve art, gardening, science, community service or other cultural activities

We're ready to award a new round of these mini-grants which average $250-$500. If you are planning an event, you're invited to apply for a grant at www.CelebrateUrbanBirds.org. Organizations working with underserved communities are strongly encouraged to apply. No experience with birds is required.

Application deadline is February 15, 2010

As you may know, Celebrate Urban Birds is a free, year-round citizen science project in which participants watch birds in their neighborhoods and report what they see. This information helps scientists better understand how birds survive in cities and make use of green spaces, including parks and gardens.

Mikkelson is a fund that allows you to apply for scholarships to attend teacher workshops, etc. For instance, if you wanted to attend the BCCE (Summer Chemistry Conference in Texas)
Aug 1-5, 2010 you could apply for funds. The BCCE was described in the last newsletter and the website is www.bcce2010.org to find out registration costs etc. The Mikkelson is due January 29, 2010 so you would need to do this pretty quickly. I hope that some of you will apply! You must be a full-time Colorado teacher!

Calling All K–12 Science Teachers: Toyota TAPESTRY Program Now Accepting Entries for the 20th Annual Science Grant Competition
The Toyota TAPESTRY Grants for Science Teachers program, sponsored by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., and administered by NSTA, is now accepting entries for the 2009–2010 competition. Now in its 20th year, the program offers grants up to $10,000 to K–12 science teachers for innovative projects that enhance science education in their school and/or school district over a one-year period.

Fifty large grants and a minimum of 20 mini-grants totaling $550,000 will be awarded this year. Individual science teachers or a team of up to five teachers can submit proposals in one of three categories: physical science application; environmental science education; and integrating literacy and science. A judging panel convened by the NSTA will select the award-winning projects based on several criteria, including their innovative approach in teaching science and ability to create a stimulating and hands-on learning environment.

Since the program’s inception in 1990, Toyota TAPESTRY grants totaling more than $8.6 million have been awarded to science teachers across the country. More than 2,000 teachers have used those funds to develop and execute extraordinary programs that helped hundreds of thousands of students nationwide make a passionate connection with science.

Each year Vernier Software &Technology and the National Science Teacher’s Association (NSTA) present the most innovative science teachers in the country with the Vernier Software & Technology/NSTA Technology Award. The awards, valued at $3000 each, are given to up to seven educators judged to have created the best inquiry-based, hands-on learning activities using data-collection technology interfaced with computers, graphing calculators and other handheld devices such as the Vernier LabQuest.
Up to one elementary teacher, two middle school teachers, three high school teachers and one college-level educator will receive the technology awards. Each award consists of $1000 in cash, $1000 in Vernier equipment, and up to $1000 toward travel and expenses for attending NSTA’s 2009 National Convention.
Entries are due by November 30, 2009 and will be judged by a panel of experts appointed by NSTA.

Educators can be nominated or self-nominate for the awards.
